Wedding Readings and Poems

Writer's picture: Chloe CairnsChloe Cairns

Hey my gorgeous couples!

I have noticed that a lot of you wonderful people are searching for readings for your cermeonies at the moment and finding it hard to see ones that you like. So! I have decided to compile some below. I know these will not be to everyone's tastes as choosing a reading for your wedding ceremony is such a personal decision (of which is why I try not to direct you with this choice) but I also realise that you have chosen me as your celebrant for a reason and we may have some similar tastes. (Also a very warm welcome to those of you who are perhaps not my couples OR not my couples quite yet!)

Hopefully you can find some inspiration from the below that might either work well for your ceremony or send you in the right direction of finding one that is right for you. It might be worth, if you are not entirely in love with any of these but like them, to search up the poet/writer who created the one you like and you may find some of their other ones more suitable for you!

Popular 2024 Wedding Readings

"Wedding Poem" by Whitney Hanson Poetry

They say that sometimes love starts with a spark.

And that might be true,

but if I were to wish you a love,

I wouldn't wish fire for you.

You see, fire is powerful.

It burns bright and then it's gone.

It's beautiful and warm,

but it doesn't last long.

So instead of wishing you a love that burns,

I wish you a love like a river twists and turns.

It changes and it flows,It is powerful and free.

But it consistently finds its way back to the sea.

And so like the water,

I hope your love is ever growing, ever changing.

I hope your love is powerful and free,

And may you always find each other,

Like a river finds the sea.

I'd Rather Rise in Love With You by By Jana Lynne Umipig

I don’t want sweet nothings whispered in my ears

I’d rather be confronted by the savory somethings

That truths communicated - in fullness and compassion bring

I don’t want long gazes or to get lost in your eyes

I ‘d rather have our eyes brave exploration,

Discovering every part of each other from curve to line -

Every wrinkle and tint and shade

Every scar and marking that our livings have made

I don’t want to feel I knew you in another life

Or that I dreamed you in my sleep

I’d rather learn you piece by piece in reality

I’d rather you teach me how the you today

Is better than before

And I want my new self to love you more,

As I Love me more

I don’t’ want to be attached, or taken, or spoken for

I don’t want to make each other whole

I’d rather be two whole beings that Make Love

Mind, Body and Soul

I don’t want to believe you do not choose who you Love

That you just know when you do

Love, to me, is a choice, you wake up every day and you choose:

What you wantWhat you need

Speak your truths to receive

Truths in exchange - Past what is perceived

Past assumptions, to gain knowings

And to keep Love growing

It’s more than the showings

It’s the clarity in communication

It’s the calm and patience past frustrations

It’s the listening and the stillness -

It’s every message from body to breath

I don’t want to fall for you

Or fall in LoveFalling is falseness, it’s fleeting

I’d rather rise in love with youIn ascension

Without fear and apprehensionI don’t want to sacrifice any part of me to make it work

I want to invest in all of me and all of you

And give gratitude

That we empower one another in self worth

I don’t want to be possessed or bound by Love

I’d rather be Liberated in LovingI’d rather be Love that is Revolutionary

Love that is Patience

And Presence

And Respect

And Pride

And Honesty, nothing to hide

And Attraction

And Joy

And Truth

In every thing we say,

show and do

In Love with you is all of this to me

And there is no place I would rather be

I Promise You by Myriah

I can’t promise you

That dark clouds

Will never hover

Over our lives

Or that the future

Will bring us many rainbows.

I can’t promise you that

Tomorrow will be perfect

Or that our lives will be easy.

I can promise you my everlasting

Devotion, my loyalty, my respect,

And my unconditional love for a lifetime.

I can promise you thatI’ll always be here for you,

To listen and to hold your hand,

And I’ll do my best to make you happy,

And make you feel loved.

I can promise you that

I can see you through a crisis

And pray with you,

Dream with you,

Build with you,

And always cheer you on

And encourage you.

I can promise you that

I’ll willingly be your protector,

Your adviser, your counsellor,

Your friend, your family,

Your everything.

I promise you.

The Art of Marriage - Wilfred A Peterson

The little things are the big things.

It is never being too old to hold hands.

It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.

It is never going to sleep angry.

It is at no time taking the other for granted;

the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,

it should continue through all the years.

It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.

It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have wings of an angel.

It is not looking for perfection in each other.

It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.

It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.

It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.

It is finding room for the things of the spirit.

It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.

It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,

dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.

It is not only marrying the right partner,

it is being the right partner.

Wedding Reading - Mark Twain

A marriage makes of two fractional lives a whole;

It gives two purposeless lives a work,

And doubles the strength of each to perform it.

It gives to two questioning natures a reason for living

And something to live for.

It will give new gladness to the sunshine,

A new fragrance to the flowers, a new beauty to the earth

And a new mystery to life.

From The X-Files

“It seems to me that the best relationships, the ones that last, are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship.

You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before.

Like a switch has been flicked somewhere.

And the person who was just a friend is…

suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.”

– Dana Scully

Neil Gaiman’s Poem for a Friends Marriage

“This is everything I have to tell you about love: nothing.

This is everything I’ve learned about marriage: nothing.

Only that the world out there is complicated,

and there are beasts in the night, and delight and pain,

and the only thing that makes it okay, sometimes,

is to reach out a hand in the darkness and find another hand to squeeze,

and not to be alone.

It’s not the kisses, or never just the kisses: it’s what they mean.

Somebody’s got your back.

Somebody knows your worst self and somehow doesn’t want to rescue you

or send for the army to rescue them.

It’s not two broken halves becoming one.

It’s the light from a distant lighthouse bringing you both safely home

because home is wherever you are both together.

So this is everything I have to tell you about love and marriage: nothing,

like a book without pages or a forest without trees.

Because there are things you cannot know before you experience them.

Because no study can prepare you for the joys or the trials.

Because nobody else’s love, nobody else’s marriage, is like yours,

and it’s a road you can only learn by walking it,

a dance you cannot be taught,

a song that did not exist before you began, together, to sing.

And because in the darkness you will reach out a hand,

not knowing for certain if someone else is even there.

And your hands will meet,

and then neither of you will ever need to be alone again.

And that’s all I know about love.”

One Tree Hill

Remember tonight, for it is the beginning of always.

A promise.

Like a reward for persisting through life so long alone.

A belief in each other and the possibility of love.

A decision to ignore, simply rise above the pain of the past.

A covenant, which at once binds two souls and yet severs prior ties.

A celebration of the chance taken and the challenge that lies ahead.

For two will always be stronger than one,

like a team braced against the tempest civil world.

And love will always be the guiding force in our lives.

For tonight is a mere formality.

Only an announcement to the world of feelings long held.

Promises made long ago.

In the sacred spaces of our hearts.
